New Business Start-up Program™
This sampling of the New Business Start-up Program™ assessment is used to help you identify key factors and steps necessary for long-term business success. This program covers 10 areas: The Right Opportunity, Business Skills, Plan & Strategy, Sales Tools & Efforts, Policies & Procedures, High Profits, Long-term Success, Managing Specific Outcomes, Owner’s Personal Life and Key Distinctions.
Let’s get started!
1. Review each statement and check each one that is true for you and/or your business. Be
rigorous; if it’s
not 100% true for you, leave it unchecked.
2. After you have finished the assessment, review the statements that are unchecked. These are
the areas you
need to focus on to position your business for success.

Right Opportunity
I have at least 6-12 months of expenses (both personal and professional) in the bank
before starting
I have experimented first for at least 90 days with the field or business so I have
evidence that it works, not just a plan or a gut feeling
I have used this product or service, know it’s value first-hand and completely believe in it
People clearly want to this product or service; they may also need it
Leadership: I direct people and efforts easily and well
Consistency: I have enough personal discipline to stick to this and carry it out. I
self-manage and initiate
Influence: I am not afraid/intimidated by people (prospects, customers, staff); I have no
problem approaching prospects, advising customers or telling staff what they need to do
Problem Solver: I easily reduce a complex problem to bite-sized pieces and then take
steps to correct the problem and prevent it from occurring again
I have done a start-up cost budget, including equipment/capital expenditures,
organizational expenses and other expenses needed over the first 3 months
I have written out a step-by-step action plan with dozens of steps and am working that
list
My top 3 goals are clear, written, visually displayed, tracked and “gotten” by all as the
priorities, including myself
I track my action plan weekly to see if I am on course
I have the marketing materials I need to attract the customers/clients to buy
I have designed my company and my product or service to be very, very attractive
(versus promotive) to my market
I have the selling points of my product or service written out, memorized and I am very
polished when presenting this information
I know how to “close the sale” and get paid
My company has policies and procedures well documented
My business is so well planned, controlled and insured that if my home or office were
leveled this afternoon, I’d be backing business the next day and/or have insurance
money to help
I have designed the company systems so that there is a minimum of paper work
I have daily and/or weekly checklists of what must be done and by whom
I have set the company up to be more profit driven than growth driven
There is a strong, profitable future in my field or industry. I am not selling pet rocks
I have future plans for additional products and revenue streams
My target market/ideal client is well-defined, can afford to buy and I know how to access
these people
I continually add value to my product or service
I know how to build a strong, positive reputation in my niche and I do
My company’s mission statement is authentic, reflects my thoughts and feelings perfectly
and guides my business
My customers can easily articulate the benefits of my service or product and do so
I know my cash flow needs
I know my current and aged receivables
I I know my daily/weekly/monthly sales goals and results
I know what I need my net profits to be
I have a strong personal foundation
I take excellent care of myself
I am defined by who I am – not by my business
I get the support I need from my family and/or friends
Profitability vs. growth
Leadership vs. management
Risk vs. “going for broke”
Priorities vs. agendas
